Building Reliable Supply Chains in Emerging Markets

By TAN International Editorial5 July 20262 min read

What it takes to establish consistent, high-volume supply from producers in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East - and the common pitfalls to avoid.

Sourcing from emerging markets offers significant commercial advantages - competitive pricing, access to distinctive product ranges, and growing producer capacity. But reliability requires deliberate investment in relationship infrastructure, not just price negotiation.

The reliability gap

The most common failure point in emerging market supply chains isn't quality - it's consistency. Volume delivery, lead time adherence, and documentation accuracy are where partnerships break down, often not because of bad intent but because of inadequate systems on the supplier side.

The solution isn't to avoid these markets. It's to invest the time upfront to build the operational relationship that makes consistency possible.

What reliable sourcing looks like in practice

  • On-ground presence or representation - Remote relationships rarely produce consistent results. Whether through a local agent or direct visits, physical presence matters.
  • Shared documentation standards - Provide suppliers with your exact documentation requirements before the first shipment, not after the first rejection.
  • Staged volume growth - Begin with smaller orders to stress-test logistics before committing to high-volume contracts.
  • Payment terms that work both ways - Aggressive payment terms applied to smaller suppliers create cash flow problems that eventually surface as quality or delivery issues.

TAN International has built supply relationships across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East over multiple years. The relationships that perform best are those where both sides have invested in understanding each other's operational constraints.
